Deformed Bill

These are two pictures of the same bird we had in our yard this morning. A few months ago I came across a story about bill deformities in Alaska. This is the first time I have seen something like this here in Idaho. In the little research I have done I have not seen anything reported on morning doves.

If anyone has any more information on this I would greatly appreciate it!

Hmm, looks like a bill after Congress had it's turn with it. :(

Chris – I'm a reporter north of you in Hamilton, MT. I've seen pictures like this dove of yours from a woman in our valley named Judy Hoy. She'd be interested in your findings. I don't have her e-mail or contact info, but I do have a link to a piece she wrote about the abnormalities. I never wrote a story about bird beak abnormalities, but I did some research and contacted a biologist in Alaska who was studying beak problems with crows in Alaska. She didn't know the cause. A local biologist here has told me that there is no clear cause for beak abnormalities and they are uncommon. Judy believes they are very common.

Greg,
Thanks for taking the time to post and thank you for the information. I spoke with a Yellowstone Park Ranger and received about the same answer. Alaska seems to be ahead of the game by having local individuals educated on what to look for and how to report problems. If there was a problem with beak abnormalities here in the northwest it could easily go overlooked.
Thanks again!
